Sneak Peek:
Moments later…….
Christopher shot out of the void and once again found himself tumbling hard and fast into an unknown world. Only this time he had landed in what looked to be a dark and disgusting alley. It was raining and the sky was black, so black that Christopher automatically assumed that it must have been the middle of the night -- though the black sky above did seem to be quite a bit darker than any night sky Christopher had ever seen. In any case, he hit the ground hard and tumbled along the cracked and gnarled uneven alley cement (a much less forgiving surface than his last landing location) until he came to an abrupt and painful stop hitting the back of his head against a large and rusted metal garbage can. Suffice it to say, this landing hurt – a lot! By the time he had stopped tumbling, he had assured himself that instead of a simple sampling of an unknown local stink, that he would now have the privilege of coming away with a few war wounds worth talking about -- some ripped up elbows, a couple of scraped and bruised knees, a two-inch gash along the right side of his face, and a good-sized bump on the back of his head. Truly, all things aside, not a bad landing.
After finally coming to a hard and immediate stop, he sat with his back against the garbage can and tried to shake the cobwebs from his aching brain. Everything around him was very dark. In fact, it was as dark a space as he had ever experienced – he could not see his hand in front of his face. Even back in the darkness within those sewage pipes he was able to see some depth – but not here. For a moment, Christopher was scared – until suddenly the world around him began to come into focus. It was as if someone was slowly raising a dimming switch -- but without any color. The world around Christopher was in shadows of black and white. He could now see shapes and forms, but without color it felt a bit empty and lifeless. Christopher had just been ripped from a vibrant world full of color, hope, singing trees, and honey sweet fuzzy fruit. And now he sat with a pulsating head in what looked to be a lifeless, tasteless, and bland anti-utopia – it was extremely depressing.
With his new reality in question, and his current pain emanating from pretty much every part of his body, Shikhana still had his heart and sat front and center within Christopher’s mind. He simply could not let go of his recent revelation of the love he felt for her. It hurt so bad to think of her sitting on those shattered streets of Jahar with diamond-like tears streaming down her face and no way for him to comfort her. In addition, he thought it completely unfair that he would be shown something so wonderful, and so special……and then have it ripped away with no knowledge of whether he would ever see her again. At this point, sitting within this black and white movie, the only positive thought Christopher could hold onto was the knowledge that all of the Atherians were safe; that all who had been enslaved were now free; and that Shikhana, his one true love, was alive and could now live above the ground without fear – forever eating the honey sweet hairy goodness within her favorite place – the singing forest. He had discovered that he was not only willing to risk his life for her, but that the lives and freedom of her people were of equal importance. So important, in fact, that he found he was willing to sacrifice that love to ensure that their freedom (which included Shikhana) was forever. His father’s riddle had been answered, and he was now onto his next adventure.
